about

We decided on the name of this song quite late - after we'd recorded it, in fact, and were having a well-deserved pint at a local pub within walking distance of the studio. Up until that point we'd been calling it "Castles", since when I brought it into the practice room I'd thought it could be titled "Castles in the Sky" - a notion that was swiftly shot down when the rest of the band pointed out that there was a famous 90s trance song with that title, and began to sing it at me (enthusiastically). Before we decided to make this the title track for the album, though, we knew what the song was going to be about- we wanted to write something that would make our opinions on the more politically-motivated bands that fall within our chosen subgenre quite clear. The result is a song which deals with the idea that home is where you lay your roots and not where you're born, and makes it clear that no one should be punished for their differences- "punish not for creed or culture". The chorus ("don't breed anguish with politics") is one of my favourite parts of any Northern Oak song (or any other song, full stop!)

lyrics

You think because you name them,
You master these wilds
But language and labels
Hold no sway.
They've no heritage.

Don't breed anguish with politics.
Lands are not possessions or chains.
All beings must feel their freedom
Under the boundless grace of sky.

You never begrudged
The myriad frames
Of Nature.

So why does the slightest
Difference
In your fellow man
Gall you so.

Punish not for creed or culture,
This earth need not bleed out sorrow.

Don't breed anguish with politics.
Lands are not possessions or chains.
All beings must feel their freedom
Under the boundless grace of sky.

Our forms were born from stars
So drop your hatred
See how bright life blazes.
