about

Chris says: Ah, The Scarlet Woman. This song, in spite of my greatest fears, became the 'Woodland Whispers' of this album; Woodland Whispers was the track on 'Tales From Rivelin' which was incredibly complicated, took months to record and drove me into paroxysms of incredible rage whilst trying to make it work.

Unfortunately this song also travelled that path!

It was originally written by Elliot and brought to practice so we could work and refine on it, but progress was slowed by this happening while Elliot was in London and unable to make many of our practices; we had to try and work on the song remotely and keep in touch with him to make sure the song was going the way he wanted it. Needless to say, this meant it took a lot longer, and the convoluted nature of the song itself didn't help!

In terms of subject matter, it's about the biblical Whore of Babylon who lays waste to the world in the book of Revelations, and Martin's lyrics are heavily derived from the biblical text. However, as his way, he's taken a slightly more sinister approach to the text and given it an extra layer of meaning; the words "how my trembling flesh yearns to drink deeply from those sins and plumb the depths of their profanity" could easily reflect our protagonist's deepest desires, denied (as most sexual desires undoubtedly were) by the strict and repressed nature of Victorian society.

lyrics

She sits atop the beast, upon her forehead her name is carved, Babylon the Great.
None can comprehend the glory of she
Who defiles mankind with their blind consent.
Drunken on the blood of saints.

Luring, she calls me hither. I see her and wonder with admiration. She rules over the kings of the earth. Host for demons, haunt for spirits and every unclean creature.

None can comprehend the glory of she
Who defiles mankind with their blind consent.
Drunken on the blood of saints. Luring, she calls me hither. I see her and wonder with admiration.

I care not if the fruit I long for will be stolen from me. If you are my bringer of ruin, I will embrace the smoke of your burning. So pour forth the wine of your adulteries. I disregard the word of the lamb and pursue her virulent vision, witness to her debaucheries. Revelling in her diabolical nature so impure.

She holds a golden cup in her hand, full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. Revelling in her diabolical nature so impure.

How my trembling flesh yearns to drink deeply from those sins and plumb the depths of their profanity. Revelling in her diabolical nature so impure.
