about

There is a certain space that opens in your head when you take yourself far out of the city and gaze across the glorious rolling landscapes of England. The lyrics to Gaia wonder whether if Lovelock's hypothesis that this planet is just one great complex system is true, then what are we losing with our craving to drown nature in concrete? How is our sub conscious tortured by not being able to feel the pulse of the earth?
~Martin

Gaia is the first of two songs on the album which explore different ideas of the Earth Mother, the personification of nature as a nurturing mother figure. The name 'Gaia' specifically relates to the Greek version of the Earth Mother idea- the primordial goddess of the Earth, who created the Universe and everything within it, as well as giving birth to all of the primal gods of the Greek pantheon. However, while the soap opera that is Greek mythology would make a great subject for a song, that isn't the focus for this track! Musically, this was one that Rich did most of the initial work on- the song developed from the bass riff that he's playing over the introduction and didn't require too much tweaking from his original idea. It's definitely one of our more complicated songs, with a 3/4 break and a stop/start section that caused us some trouble at first before we managed to lock it down.
~Chris

lyrics

Cognoscere anima
Cognoscere anima
Cognoscere anima.

By the kiss of dawn I've let my shadow self eclipse the soul.
Seen how my wings of creativity have been clipped by concrete.

Sensing a truth we once all shared has been lost in society's mortar.

If I let weariness
Crack my carved persona,
Splinter knots of my struggles,
Seem so base yet so much more.

Return to the primal
Fierceness of life
Inside each sapling
Seeking to pierce the sky.

By the kiss of dawn I've let my shadow self eclipse the soul.
Seen how my wings of creativity have been clipped by concrete.

Feeling the pulse of the earth, borrow energy, seethe with insects,
Be the downpour and rage with the tempest and scream with the tide.
I can fulminate volcano.
Know that I burn with a flame I cannot name,
That religion and science have wed in the name Gaia.
